Editor: This is "Letter P," by an anonymous artist, and what strikes me is how alive it feels! What do you make of all this activity within a single letter? Curator: It’s like a little world, isn't it? An initial like this would have popped up in a book, maybe at the start of a particularly pious passage. I see horses, figures wrestling…it feels almost medieval, doesn't it? Like a tiny illuminated manuscript page. Editor: It does, and with so much going on, I wonder, is there one dominant symbolic element? Curator: Perhaps the struggle itself. The "P" could stand for penance, piety… the internal battles we all face. What do you think? Editor: It certainly lends the letter more depth than I initially imagined. I'll remember that next time I see an initial like this. Curator: Absolutely, look closer, and the letter becomes a portal.
