This photographic image of the Sint-Petrus'-Bandenkerk in Leende, was made by an anonymous photographer with a camera, at an unknown date. I love how the sepia tone gives the photo a feeling of looking into the past, like a memory fading at the edges. The muted palette allows for a focus on the texture and form; the way the light catches on the rough stone of the tower, or how it casts shadows that give depth to the graveyard, for instance. There's a section in the middle of the tower where the windows look out like eyes peering out from a face. The composition, with the tower dominating the frame, also invites us to think about the way buildings tell stories, about the people who built them, lived near them, or were buried in the graveyard that surrounds the building. This image is a reminder of how the physical world holds traces of human experience. Think of it as a dialogue between the past and present. Like the work of Bernd and Hilla Becher, the image is a window into another time, and another way of seeing.
