This Untitled sculpture was made by Alexander Calder, and it's made of metal. Calder's approach to sculpture is so interesting, he reduces everything to these simple shapes and lines and then sets them in motion. It’s like he’s drawing in space, isn't it? I love the way the different elements balance each other, with the weight of the black circles contrasting with the lightness of the white disc, and the playful red circle floating above. You get a sense of the artist’s hand in the bending and shaping of the metal, it’s not perfect or polished, and that’s what makes it so appealing. The whole piece is so delicate and fragile, almost like it could blow away with a puff of wind. It reminds me of Joan Miro, another artist who was interested in simple forms and playful compositions, there’s something very joyful and life-affirming about both of their work, even though they never collaborated. Art is really an ongoing conversation across time.
