This comic strip, "Tom Nikker Naar De Wedrennen," of a Black American man and his out-of-control horse, was made by Gordinne. Imagine Gordinne sitting at their desk, hatching this chaotic story, panel by panel. I wonder if they felt a kinship with Tom, or were they simply documenting a narrative they found unfolding around them? The scenes burst with a kind of frenetic energy. See how each frame captures a different stage of the horse's wild ride. The color palette is subdued, almost pastel, giving it a vintage feel, but the action is anything but calm. I'm drawn to the artist's hand here, the way they lay down each stroke to create a sense of movement and unfolding events. It reminds me that art, like life, is often about embracing the unpredictable, the messy, and the wonderfully absurd.
