Asher Brown Durand made this engraving, *Atlantic Souvenir*, as the title page for an annual gift book, a popular genre in the 19th century. These books, often filled with sentimental stories and poems, were marketed towards women, reinforcing the idea of women as the primary consumers and custodians of culture. Here, Durand depicts a muse-like figure seated on clouds, holding a book and being crowned with flowers by a winged figure. Durand worked during a period of significant social change, including debates about women's roles and rights, and this image reflects the complex ways women were both idealized and confined by social expectations. Does the sentimental nature of this title page also subtly question the intellectual capabilities of its predominantly female readership? Or, is it simply a reflection of the limited opportunities afforded to women in artistic and literary fields at the time? The work becomes a poignant artifact of a bygone era, inviting us to consider how cultural products reflect, reinforce, and occasionally challenge the norms of their time.
