This page, by Niels Larsen Stevns, contains handwriting and timelines charting ancient Egyptian dynasties. The loose, informal marks give the impression of artmaking as a process of discovery. Looking at the paper, you get a sense of the artist's hand, of his thinking as it moves across the page. The writing is clear, but not overly precise, a bit like my own painting style, where I want the viewer to see the layers and the process. There's an openness here, an invitation to engage with the material rather than just passively observe. Notice the way the Roman numerals are drawn, each one a unique gesture. It's as if Stevns is not just recording information, but also exploring the visual rhythm of these ancient symbols. There's something almost childlike in the way Stevns approaches this task, reminding me of the graphic experimentation of Cy Twombly. Like Twombly, Stevns finds a way to turn historical data into a field of poetic associations, embracing ambiguity over fixed meaning.
