This photograph of Irene With and two unknown women in a field, was captured with a camera, we don't know when. It's funny how a snapshot can feel so loaded. The grayscale flattens the whole scene. You notice the stark contrast between the women's dark dresses and the surrounding field. The texture is all in the details – the grainy film, the pattern of the dresses, the foliage around them, and the way it almost obscures the figures. There's something off-kilter about the composition, the artist doesn't seem interested in perfect balance or clarity. Instead, it’s the mood that lingers. It's interesting to think about how an image like this relates to portraiture and landscape painting. Think about those early landscape painters like Courbet, who blurred the lines between realism and something else, a way of seeing that feels more about the world as felt. This photograph feels like an extension of that idea, an exploration of experience through image making.
