Giorgio Morandi made this modest little still life, *Natura Morta,* with oil on canvas. The color! It’s like the whole scene’s been dipped in milk. These are some seriously muted tones. He’s not trying to dazzle us with color; it’s all about the shapes, the light, and how they sit together. There's something comforting in that tight palette, like a visual hug. I love the surface texture, you can tell he’s really worked the paint. There are layers here, evidence of the hand, each touch so deliberate. Notice the tall, white bottle. It’s not just a bottle; it’s a monument, solid and present. He must have gone over that shape again and again. Morandi’s a master of quiet observation, he reminds me a little of Agnes Martin, in the sense of endless repetition and devotion to a single, simple idea.
