Johann Nepomuk Strixner created this print of Saint Catherine with a book, sometime in the first half of the 19th century. Prints like this one were often made after paintings. It is interesting to consider the public role played by prints in making religious imagery more widely available at this time in Bavaria. Looking closely, we can see that Saint Catherine is presented as an exemplar of piety and learning. Her thoughtful demeanor suggests both spiritual devotion and intellectual engagement. We can consider this image in relation to the cultural and institutional history of 19th century Europe, with its emphasis on religious education, and its conflicted relationship with the institutions of the Catholic Church. Careful research into the religious history of the period might tell us more about this image, and about the artist who made it. The meaning of art is always contingent on social and institutional context.
