This chamber candlestick, or taperstick, was made by John Figg. The choice of silver as a medium evokes a feeling of understated luxury, contrasting with more flamboyant displays of wealth. Notice the concentric composition; how the light plays across the metallic surface to accentuate the structure. The eye is immediately drawn to the central candle holder, a column of carefully considered geometric forms – from the circular base and octagonal mid-section to the top. These shapes are echoed in the pan beneath, structured by radiating lines. Next to the candle holder is a cone shape which disrupts the symmetry. This juxtaposition of geometric forms and their arrangement creates a visual equilibrium, inviting close inspection. The design is further enhanced by the interplay of light and shadow. Light reflects off the silver and delineates each section adding to the feeling of refined elegance. The structure embodies the idea of understated sophistication.
