Fritz Syberg made this landscape study with pen and ink, and what strikes me is the way he builds up the image through layers of marks, like weaving a dense fabric. The texture he creates is fascinating. There’s a real sense of depth, even though it's just lines on paper. Look at how he varies the pressure and the spacing of the lines, some areas dense and dark, others light and airy. It’s a bit like how we build up layers in painting, but here, it’s all about the line, the basic element of drawing. Notice the horizontal hatching, especially in the middle ground; it flattens the picture plane, but also vibrates with energy. This piece reminds me of other artists, like Van Gogh, who also used line to build form and express emotion. And it’s a good reminder that art isn’t about perfect representation but about finding new ways to see and feel the world around us.
