Patrick Caulfield made this painting of a Weekend Cabin sometime in the last century using flat colour and bold black outlines. This is how he takes something completely ordinary and transforms it into something special. The green background is so smooth and even, it’s almost like looking at a print. The whole surface is so flat, which just adds to the charm. Then there are those lines, they're not perfect, they wobble and vary in thickness like somebody traced the image. And the green of the window shutters? It feels so deliberate, like a considered design choice. Caulfield reminds me of other artists like Alex Katz. With Katz, you get these incredibly slick surfaces and graphic, simplified shapes. But with Caulfield, you get this slightly rougher, more playful quality. It’s like he's saying, "Yeah, I’m making art, but I’m also having fun."
