Curator: This is Francisco Goya's "Why Hide the Purses?" from his series *Los Caprichos*. Look closely. What’s your first impression? Editor: Sheesh, a creepy circus! That old man clutching his coin purse looks terrified. Curator: Indeed. This etching uses satire to critique the social structures of 18th-century Spain, specifically the abuse of power by the clergy and aristocracy. Editor: See, I knew there was something sinister! The leering faces behind him…like vultures, ready to pick him clean. Curator: Consider also how the title itself, "Why Hide the Purses?", challenges the accepted norms of wealth and status in a society riddled with inequality. Editor: Makes you wonder, doesn't it? Who are the real thieves here? Certainly something to think about! Curator: Goya invites us to question the ethics of those in power and the vulnerability of those without it. A very poignant observation. Editor: Yup, even now, it gives me the shivers—a timeless message, unfortunately.
