Julie Bell, born in 1958, created “Lakota Language,” as a tender representation of two wolves in warm hues against a cool blue background. Bell’s artistic vision presents these wolves in an intimate embrace that departs from traditional representations of wolves as symbols of wilderness or ferocity. Instead, this image speaks to a shared language of affection. The title suggests something deeper about cultural identity, inviting us to consider the legacy of the Lakota people. Here, the wolves are engaged in a conversation that transcends human understanding. Their story is one of perseverance, of maintaining cultural identity amidst the currents of change and challenge. It gently reframes our understandings of connection, heritage, and the stories we inherit and pass on.
