Daniel Greene painted Ceremony, using oil on canvas. With its matte surface, oil paint allows for the creation of layered compositions that are luminous, and rich in color, as well as subtle blends between colors. Here, the artist built up the image, focusing on the geometric forms of numbers and blocks of color, and contrasting these with organic subjects. Oil paint is slow-drying, which allows the artist to blend the colors on the canvas surface, creating a sense of depth and volume. The numbers in the background are layered using the technique of impasto where the paint is applied so thickly that it stands out from the surface. Greene has combined skilled brushwork with abstract elements, asking us to question traditional distinctions between fine art and craft, and to appreciate the inherent qualities of the materials and the processes involved in its production.
