Max Cosman captured this portrait of Coba Roos with a camera, at an unknown date. During the late 19th century, photography democratized portraiture, allowing more people, especially women, to have their likeness recorded. Coba Roos is captured in a simple, elegant style. Her dark dress and delicate gold chain, along with her serious expression, reflect the restrained fashion of the time. As photography began to capture a wider segment of the population, it challenged traditional, often idealized, representations of women. Cosman, working within the confines of early photographic technology, offers us a direct, unfiltered glimpse into the life of a woman whose story might otherwise be lost. It invites us to reflect on the individual stories of women, and their evolving roles in society.
