Curator: This photograph, thought to be by Bernarda Bryson Shahn, is called "Untitled (Calumet, Pennsylvania)." Editor: It strikes me as unsettling, almost spectral. The inverted tones give the scene a sense of unease. Curator: Indeed. The stark contrast might speak to the cultural complexities of industrial towns like Calumet, and the hidden struggles of their residents. Editor: I see a deeper symbolism too. The shadowy figure in front of what looks like a modest home, possibly a worker's dwelling, suggests themes of labor and the everyday. What’s your view? Curator: The symbolism could be read in many ways. Perhaps the darkness also hints at the environmental impact of industry. This image may symbolize forgotten histories and resilience. Editor: I agree. It has certainly given me a different lens through which to view this. Thank you for sharing that.
