Roger Deats made this drawing of a Triangle Field Water Keg with watercolor. What is compelling about this is the artist’s absolute commitment to the subject matter, which seems humble, but is actually elevated here. Deats’ drawing is so matter-of-fact, so without fuss, that it verges on obsessive. I see how the artist is drawn to the variations in the tones and hues of the wood, and it reminds me that even so-called simple objects have their own complex and interesting forms. Look closely at the small knot on the left side of the water keg. It's rendered with such precision and care, it becomes almost sculptural. This drawing feels like coming home in a funny way. It reminds me of the paintings of Giorgio Morandi, who was also drawn to the beauty of simple, everyday objects. I think Deats helps us see the world with new eyes, finding beauty in the unexpected.
