This sepia photograph, made by an anonymous photographer from Monumentenzorg, has a slightly old-fashioned feel. The limited colour palette gives it a timeless quality, like a memory fading into the past. The surface of the print is smooth and the image is clear. You can see every detail of the house Boetelaersborg te 's Heerenberg, from the shutters on the windows to the dome on the tower. But it's the trees surrounding the house that really grab my attention. They're dark and brooding, framing the house like a stage set. The way the light filters through the leaves creates a sense of mystery, as if something is hidden just out of sight. Thinking about other artists who might play with this sense of light and shadow, I'm reminded of Edward Hopper. He used light to create a sense of drama in his paintings, and I see a similar quality here. It’s about capturing a moment in time and hinting at a story without ever telling it directly.
