This ‘Nieuwjaarswens van de Amsterdamse nachtwacht voor het jaar 1859’ or ‘New Year's Greeting from the Amsterdam Night Watch for the year 1859’ was created by Friedrich Robert Prinz using engraving. It reflects on the cultural traditions and social dynamics of mid-19th century Amsterdam. The print contains the poem written for the occasion, as well as domestic imagery, and winter scenes. The ‘Nachtwacht’ or Night Watch, are depicted, as well as families and children. These images provide insight into the social values and domestic ideals of the time. The work also contains winter scenes of Amsterdam, illustrating the way the season, and New Year's traditions were celebrated. It also captures the relationship between the Night Watch and the community it served.
