Henri Matisse made this drawing of a nude, with part of the head cut off, using ink on paper. Looking at this drawing, you can see how Matisse got the most information across with the fewest possible lines. This is artmaking as a process of reduction! Matisse really makes you feel the paper, doesn't he? The drawing is so simple it's almost brutal, but in a really tender way. See how he uses line to create volume and shadow with just a few strokes? The hand is just incredible, so gestural, like a flurry of energy. It gives the whole piece a sense of movement, as if the figure is just about to shift her pose. I think of other artists like Picasso who were exploring similar ideas, but Matisse’s approach always feels so uniquely graceful. Ultimately, art is just an ongoing conversation, isn't it? A constant back-and-forth of ideas, inspirations, and interpretations.
