This undated print, "Destilleerapparaten en een net om vogels te vangen," was created by Bernard Picart. Picart lived during the late 17th and early 18th centuries, a time of significant scientific advancement and exploration in Europe. Here, we see distilling devices, tools of alchemy and early chemistry, juxtaposed with a bird-catching net. The placement of these images together invites us to consider the relationship between scientific inquiry and humanity’s impact on nature. What does it mean to capture, transform, or control elements of the natural world? This print reflects a society grappling with new technologies and their ethical implications. Picart, through his composition, prompts a deeper reflection on the changing world and our place within it. It encourages us to consider the complex interplay between progress, environment, and human ambition.
