Norman Rockwell made this painting called Solitaire, sometime during his career. It's soaked in red, like he mixed a big bucket of it and then just went to town! The redness feels heavy, but if you look closer, you see the paint isn’t applied all that thickly. The textures are gentle, and the light catches them in ways that really make the scene pop. The surface is smooth, but it still lets you know that Rockwell was working, layering, pushing the paint around, making decisions and changing his mind. Look at the way the lamp glows, casting a warm light on the man playing cards. The way Rockwell captured that moment is special; you can sense his hand in there. It reminds me of Edward Hopper, how he also captured these quiet, intimate moments. What do you think?
