Curator: My first impression is one of detritus, a dark landscape of discarded objects. Editor: This photograph is titled Erasers II: On the Rocks by Tim Head, part of the Tate Collections. It presents a rather bleak assemblage, doesn't it? Curator: Absolutely. The contrast between the playful, brightly colored toys and the harsh, rocky setting creates a jarring effect. It feels like a commentary on lost innocence. Editor: Considering the period, this could be a statement on Cold War anxieties, reflecting the potential erasure of childhood by larger political forces. The rocks themselves evoke a sense of permanence against the fragility of these mass-produced objects. Curator: The toys, scattered like relics, almost become symbolic artifacts of a bygone era, hinting at the ephemerality of consumer culture. Even the title implies a cleansing or forgetting. Editor: Yes, and the composition's focus – this illuminated mound amidst darkness – brings a certain drama, underscoring the tension between memory and oblivion. Curator: Seeing this, I'm left pondering how we collectively process cultural anxieties and the symbols we unintentionally leave behind. Editor: It's fascinating how an arrangement of objects can reflect broader socio-political themes, leaving us with a potent sense of unease.

Genetic modification, toxic waste and other controversial issues facing modern society are explored in a series of works by Tim Head. This photograph features a seductive, yet contaminated landscape, filled with small rubber erasers moulded in the shape of human skulls, surrounded by toy aeroplanes. Whilst the objects in themselves are playful, the image raises more serious questions about the consequences of our fast-paced lifestyle and the polluted burden placed upon the environment. Gallery label, September 2004
