This photograph, Krakkebrug bij de Boven-Saramacca, was taken by Jacob Evert Wesenhagen. I love how this picture almost feels like a drawing. I can imagine Wesenhagen, camera in hand, composing the scene, deciding what to include and what to leave out. There’s a real sense of adventure here, like Wesenhagen was forging a path through the landscape, drawn to the bridge and the dense forest beyond. The texture is incredible—all those tangled branches and dense foliage. I bet the air was thick and humid. What kind of story is that bridge telling? This photograph reminds me of other landscape artists like Caspar David Friedrich, who were also drawn to the sublime power of nature. Wesenhagen, like Friedrich, seems to be inviting us to contemplate our place in the world. It’s like he’s saying, "Look at this, isn't it amazing?" And it is.
