This graphite drawing on paper, *Udkast til bibelsk komposition. Den kongelige embedsmands søn, John. 4.50*, was made by Niels Larsen Stevns, we don't know exactly when. There's something so intimate about seeing an artist's initial sketch. You know, the raw bones of an idea before it gets fleshed out. The tentative lines here, the way the figures are suggested rather than defined, it's like peeking into Stevns’ thought process. I love how the figures seem to emerge from a haze of lines, a sort of dance between clarity and ambiguity. There's a looseness, a kind of vulnerability, in the graphite marks that I find really appealing. It reminds me of some of Philip Guston's looser figurative drawings, where the process is laid bare, and the imperfections become part of the work's charm. It makes you think about the nature of seeing, of how much our brains fill in the gaps, constructing a coherent image from minimal information.
