Opstanding 1510

Albrecht Dürer’s 1510 woodcut, *Opstanding*, depicts the resurrection of Christ. Dürer captures the drama of the event with striking detail. The resurrected Christ stands triumphantly, radiating light and casting a shadow over the startled guards at his feet. The detail in their armor and facial expressions speaks to the power of Dürer’s mastery of this printing technique, and this image would have been very popular in 16th-century Europe. The small size and focus on the central moment of the resurrection made it ideal for private devotional use. The image is currently located in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam.
