Cornelis Vreedenburgh made this pencil drawing of a sailboat and dock. It has a real sense of immediacy, right? Like Vreedenburgh was just sitting there, quickly capturing what he saw. Look at how the marks are used – some are dark and definite, outlining the boat, while others are light and blurry, suggesting the water and reflections. I always feel like a drawing can be a kind of thinking out loud. The way you can see the artist working through ideas, changing lines, or adding shadows, it’s like a map of their thoughts, right there on the page. The reflections in the water are especially cool. Those squiggly lines create a sense of movement and depth. It reminds me of Morandi, who also explored simple, everyday subjects. Both artists show us how much there is to see in the ordinary, if we just take the time to look.
