Editor: This is Volume 8 of Hokusai's Manga Sketchbooks. I'm struck by how many different faces he captures. How do you read Hokusai's composition of faces on these two pages? Curator: The composition reveals a conscious exploration of form. Note how Hokusai uses minimal lines to define each character, focusing on the interplay of positive and negative space to convey volume and expression. Do you see a pattern? Editor: I see rows, but each face is unique. It's amazing how much emotion he conveys with so few lines. I wonder if there's a story behind each face. Curator: Perhaps, but consider how the arrangement itself generates meaning. The repetition of the grid creates a visual rhythm, while subtle variations in expression invite contemplation on the human condition. That's the beauty. Editor: It's almost like a study in portraiture. I've never thought of manga in this way before. Curator: Indeed, Hokusai’s work challenges our conventional understanding of both art and manga.
