This is Childe Hassam’s etching titled “Giant Elm.” Can you imagine him, with his etching needle and copper plate, carefully layering each tiny line? It’s like he’s building a world, not with color, but with densities of marks. I wonder what Hassam felt standing before this massive tree. Did he feel small? Intimidated? I imagine he saw it as a challenge, a puzzle to be solved. Look how he uses the etched line to suggest light filtering through the leaves. There’s this dance between detail and suggestion. The building behind the tree is almost swallowed by the elm’s presence, yet Hassam gives us just enough information to understand the scene. The shadow cast by the tree, those quick, dark lines, they tell us so much about the light and the tree's imposing size. Artists build on each other's ideas. Hassam takes what he’s learned from other etchers but then makes it his own. Painting, like any art form, is a conversation across time.
