Lech Jankowski’s pencil drawing is a sea of marks on paper, a landscape of the artist's hand. Look at the pressure and repetition, the soft grayness, and the smudges of graphite – I wonder what kind of pencil he used? The title translates as “Sea Ventilation for Mr. Camaro,” which is wonderfully absurd and suggestive. I imagine Jankowski working in his studio, thinking about Mr. Camaro, and creating a kind of atmospheric service for him through the act of drawing. The marks become a way to embody thought, feeling, and even humor. There's something deeply intimate about Jankowski's work, like a private language spoken between the artist, the paper, and Mr. Camaro. It reminds me of other artists who use simple materials to create complex worlds, like Hanne Darboven, for example. They are all in conversation, these artists, creating this incredible lineage of mark-making and meaning-making. It’s like they are ventilating ideas across time and space.
