Utagawa Hiroshige created this ‘Falcon’ kakemono-e, or hanging scroll print, using woodblock printing techniques. The composition is dominated by the verticality of the tree trunk, which anchors the dynamic pose of the falcon perched upon its branch. The textured plumage of the falcon, rendered in nuanced greys and blacks, contrasts with the soft, muted palette of the background and the reddish-browns of the tree. Hiroshige masterfully employs asymmetry to create a sense of naturalness and movement. The falcon’s gaze directs us upwards, engaging with the implied space beyond the frame, destabilizing a purely formal reading of the piece. The moon at the top right, lends a poetic, contemplative quality to the scene. It invites us to consider the symbolism inherent in Japanese art where animals and natural elements carry layered meanings. The falcon, a symbol of strength, power, and keen vision, is balanced by the moon, representing tranquility and reflection. Together, they illustrate the inter-play between action and contemplation.
