Edward Strzalkowski made this Punch's Head, and though the date is unknown, that doesn't make it any less intriguing. It's got a folksy, outsider vibe that really speaks to me. The colours are earthy, warm, almost like looking at an old toy. Check out how he renders the wood grain, those thin vertical lines, it gives the puppet a real sense of character, doesn't it? Then there's that ruff, those soft, feathery strokes create something so fluffy and innocent. I love the tension between that sweetness and those slightly manic eyes. What do you think Strzalkowski was going for here? Maybe it's a playful take on portraiture, or maybe a bit of social commentary on theatre. It reminds me a little of Red Grooms. Both artists play with form, colour and character to create something that is both humorous and thought-provoking. Art is always this ongoing conversation, and I love seeing how artists like Strzalkowski contribute to that dialogue.
