This is the title page of “Monographie du Diamant” by H. Jacobs and N. Chatrian, printed in 1880. It was a time when diamonds had become potent symbols of wealth and status, particularly for European colonial powers extracting resources from Africa and elsewhere. This book is not just a neutral study of diamonds. It reflects the intense social and economic forces at play during the late 19th century, which were rooted in colonial exploitation. Diamonds were, and continue to be, emblems of love and commitment but the glamour of diamonds often obscures the history of extraction and labor practices. The authors were likely benefiting from this system. The text serves as a reminder of the complex interplay between natural resources, power, and cultural meaning, inviting us to reflect on the ethical implications of luxury and desire.
