Where does your eye naturally travel within this composition, and what impact do you feel that rhythm has on the viewing experience? Editor: I think my eye bounces around between the different clusters of cows because they are distributed unevenly across the page, making the eye go from one cluster to the next in sort of a visual dance. Do you think the looseness of the sketch distracts from its artistic value? Curator: I wouldn’t characterize it as a distraction, but rather an essential element in the artwork’s structure. Its lack of finish actually highlights the artist’s process and focuses our attention on the core elements of representation itself: line, form, and their organization in space. Consider the deliberate placement and interplay between the figures and the paper; in what ways can we relate those choices to Skovgaard's intentions and, more generally, his artistic expression? Editor: That is so insightful! I now understand that Skovgaard isn't just representing cows, but also calling attention to the building blocks of artmaking.
