This Odd Fellows ceremonial hourglass, of unknown date, is a compelling object of ritual and visual interest. The piece is defined by the contrast between its rectilinear support structure and the rounded hourglass form cradled within. The painted wood frame, composed of red-painted cylindrical legs and circular platforms, gives the object its verticality. These elements establish a clear, geometric framework. By contrast, the bulbous, gilded hourglass introduces an organic element, its curving silhouette softening the rigid geometry. The juxtaposition of these forms creates visual tension. The object also plays with contrasts between the temporal and the timeless, the ephemeral and the enduring. An hourglass is a device for measuring the passage of time, yet, as an object displayed in a museum, it seems removed from the flow of everyday experience. This piece invites reflection on the interplay between form and function, between our human need to structure time and the fluid reality of time's passage.
