Editor: This is "Walking the Dog" by Keith Arnatt. The photograph shows a man and his poodle standing in front of a shop window. It strikes me as an odd pairing. What do you make of the composition? Curator: The formal arrangement yields a curious symmetry. Note the stark tonal contrasts, the interplay of textures between the man's tweed suit and the dog's fur. These elements, arranged within the frame, activate a visual dialogue. How does the framing influence your perception? Editor: I hadn't considered the symmetry before. The man’s cane and the dog’s pose are both vertical elements. I guess they sort of mirror each other. I’ll keep that in mind for future viewings!

Walking the Dog is a large series of black and white photographs of individuals standing outside with their dogs. While the locations depicted in the photographs vary from street pavements and country lanes to parks and gardens, all the images in this series share consistent formal characteristics: in each case the single owner stands full-length in the centre of the image facing the camera with the dog at their feet, and no other human or animal can be seen within the tightly framed square shot.
