This is an engraving of Saint Cecilia, made by Jan Baptist Herregouts in the late 17th or early 18th century. Cecilia, the patron saint of music, is depicted here with her emblematic organ, surrounded by angels and cherubs who join her in a celestial choir. The motif of musical angels is not new. You will find its echoes in countless medieval and Renaissance paintings, illustrating a desire to reach the divine through harmonies. Interestingly, Orpheus, the mythical musician, charmed beasts and gods alike with his lyre. This symbolism resurfaces in Cecilia, whose music, like Orpheus's, transcends earthly boundaries, creating an uplifting, almost ecstatic experience. The gestures and instruments convey intense emotional states, engaging viewers on a subconscious level. Cecilia's gaze transcends earthly concerns, symbolizing a deep connection to the divine, while the cherubs, in their harmonious union, embody innocence and purity. Such representation has the power to transport viewers to a place of contemplation. The cyclical progression of this symbol has resurfaced, evolved, and taken on new meanings in different historical contexts.
