Emperor Gaius Caligula c. 19th century
Editor: This engraving by Gaetano Bonatti depicts Emperor Gaius Caligula. The detail is quite striking! With that said, the subject is a bit unnerving, considering Caligula's reputation. What do you make of this depiction? Curator: It’s interesting, isn't it? Bonatti captures a certain arrogance, or perhaps just confidence, in Caligula's stance. The raised hand, the laurel wreath – it's all very deliberate. But, for me, it's also about the way history remembers people, and how artists play into that narrative. Do you feel like it confirms or challenges Caligula's historical persona? Editor: That’s insightful! I hadn't considered that interplay. It’s definitely given me a new perspective to think about.
