Curator: This is a sketch of geese, from the British School. Its date is unknown, and it resides in the Tate Collections. Editor: My first thought? A gentle humbleness, almost monastic in its simplicity. The gray washes and the small size…makes you want to whisper. Curator: Exactly. The composition directs the eye. See how the lines are economical, yet they fully suggest form and space. The artist really captures the essence of each goose. Editor: Their shadows give them a strange levity, as if they're both there and not there. But the quick, confident strokes speak to the artist's keen observation. Curator: Perhaps the artist was drawn to the geese's quiet dignity, the way they gather. I think it speaks to the idea of community, of finding peace in simplicity. Editor: And in rendering something so mundane with such attentiveness, the artist elevates it. Makes you reconsider the beauty in the ordinary. It’s lovely.
