Adrie Vürtheim made this line drawing on paper. The scene shows two figures, one writing on the ground, and I can imagine her starting with that blank page, maybe not knowing exactly what she wanted to draw. I’m getting a nostalgic feeling from this. The way she's captured the textures of the brickwork is just wonderful. It's as if she’s building this little world one line at a time. I wonder what she was thinking about when she made this. Was she remembering a scene from her own childhood? It reminds me of the drawings of Edward Gorey; there’s a slightly unnerving quality to the way the figures are composed. I can relate to that feeling as a painter – how you start out with a clear idea, but sometimes the painting takes on a life of its own and leads you down unexpected paths. And that’s when the magic happens. We are all just borrowing ideas from each other, aren't we?
