Adrie Vürtheim made "Vrouw schrijft haar naam op een pad" with pen and ink, so we're in the realm of lines, and marks that define everything. It's a drawing, but it feels like a story waiting to happen. Look at the way Vürtheim uses hatching and cross-hatching, like near the door and on the dresses, to create depth and shadow. It's so meticulous, almost obsessive. You can practically feel the scratch of the pen on paper. The two women are drawn with so much detail, one writing on the path, the other standing with an umbrella. The writing is so quirky, like a secret message. This piece reminds me of Edward Gorey, with its slightly unsettling, whimsical vibe, and the precision of the lines. It's like a page torn from a graphic novel that never was, full of untold stories and hidden meanings. It embraces the beauty of imperfection, inviting us to find our own narratives within its delicate lines.
