Boris Nicolaevich Ermolaev made this image, Windows and Plants, using graphic media, I imagine, sometime in the late 20th century. There is such a sense of process in the way the artist approached the composition: building up layers of flat color to create a simplified, yet expressive, image. I love the colour palette of the artwork. It’s so interesting to see how Ermolaev balances the muted tones of the window frame and windowsill with the vibrancy of the geraniums and the bright yellow light streaming in through the window. The way the artist renders the lacy curtain is so delicate, like a gentle breeze passing through a window on a warm summer day. I wonder if the artist had a favourite spot to sit by the window, surrounded by plants? This piece reminds me of the work of Henri Matisse, both artists capture these intimate, domestic scenes with a sense of joy and appreciation for the simple things in life. In the end, it's all about exploring the possibilities of art, and inviting us to see the world in new and unexpected ways.
