Marjan Eggermont's artwork, called 'Zo kon het zijn', Dutch for "It could have been this way," shows four squares in a grid, each a vibrant, traffic-cone orange, atop a gray, metallic ground. I imagine Eggermont experimenting with this in her studio, trying out different ratios. Orange is such a loaded color, isn’t it? Think Rothko, but with a twist. In each square, the orange sits differently, creating a dialogue between color and support. Maybe Eggermont was considering that moment when color meets surface, embracing the potential of what could be. It's a dance of color, form, and space, but also of the real and the imagined. With all these considerations, it feels like a little conversation with painters like Rothko and Barnett Newman who were invested in color. It reminds me that art is this ongoing conversation, where each brushstroke or decision opens up new possibilities.
