Salvator Rosa created this etching, "A Gathering of Students", during the 17th century, a period of significant intellectual and artistic change. Rosa himself occupied a unique position, both celebrated and controversial, known for his romantic spirit and rebellious nature. Notice how this gathering takes place outside, in a wooded area. Rosa presents an image of philosophical learning deeply connected to nature and humanity, rather than the confines of academic institutions. The figures are draped in robes and are in poses of active discussion and contemplation. Rosa challenges the traditional representations of learning which were often associated with wealth and power, choosing to place it in a more accessible, natural setting. Rosa’s work invites us to reflect on the spaces where knowledge is created and shared. He prompts a consideration of how different environments might shape our understanding of ourselves and the world around us.
