"Verschillende uniformen van Engelse Rangers," or "Different Uniforms of English Rangers," is a watercolor drawing by S.G. Casten. The image depicts six figures in military attire. It is accompanied by handwritten notes that identify each ranger according to their position. The artist meticulously captures the details of the uniforms, from the color-coded plumes atop their hats, which designate rank, to the polished buttons and precisely tailored jackets. This work offers a glimpse into the visual language of power and identity of the time. What does it mean to be seen, to be recognized, to belong? The uniforms create a sense of collective identity, but also reinforce social hierarchies. The artist captures the tension between individual identity and the homogenizing force of institutional dress.
