This collection of carved figures and a small container were made by an Inuit artist. They represent many of the animals in the Arctic environment, and suggest the subsistence practices of the Inuit people. The Quadruped and other animals are not just representations, but embodiments of a complex relationship with the natural world. The geography and climate of the Arctic have profoundly shaped Inuit culture and spirituality. Animals are not merely sources of food and materials but are imbued with spiritual significance, reflected in the rich tradition of Inuit art and storytelling. Understanding the social conditions that shape artistic production requires delving into the history of cultural exchange and colonial encounters that have affected Inuit communities. Ethnographic research and collaboration with indigenous scholars would be valuable resources in interpreting this artwork.
