Curatorial notes
This engraving by Pieter Schenk portrays Adriaan Reland, a scholar of oriental languages. Note the oval frame, a form that speaks to cyclical time, of containment and repetition. Consider the wig, meticulously curled, a symbol of status in Reland's time. Such adornments echo through art history, from ancient Egyptian headdresses to the elaborate hairstyles of the Rococo period. The wig, like a mask, both conceals and reveals, signifying authority while obscuring the individual. Such recurring motifs act as a cultural script, passed down through generations, each time subtly altered by the collective unconscious. These images tap into deep, shared memories, triggering emotional responses beyond the purely aesthetic. As we trace these motifs, we recognize that meaning is not static but in constant flux, evolving and adapting to new cultural landscapes.
