This unbound page of photographs and text about Koeriersters, or female couriers, is housed in the Rijksmuseum. I imagine someone carefully placing each item in its place, layering image and text like paint. I can almost see them pushing the images around, figuring out the composition. Thinking about the artist, or compiler, they probably wanted to capture the essence of a moment, a feeling, a story about these women. Each image, a captured instant, frozen in time and space, speaks volumes about their bravery, their sacrifice. I wonder what it was like for the 17-year-old girl who carried a code from Holland. What was she thinking? How did she feel? I bet she was so scared! The page becomes more than just a historical document, it becomes a site for contemplation, a space to honor these unsung heroes. I am moved by the ongoing conversation and exchange of ideas across time, inspiring creativity.
