Erich Wichmann made this drawing of two standing figures on paper, we think around 1923. The soft pencil lines create a haunting sense of depth and emotion. Look at the figure on the left, how it's rendered with solid shading, almost like a dark mass. Then, beside it, the figure on the right is barely there, just an outline, a ghostly presence. The texture of the paper shows through, adding to the ethereal quality. There's a tension between what's present and what's absent, what's real and what's imagined. It reminds me a bit of Edvard Munch, especially in the way it captures a feeling of unease and existential dread. But Wichmann has his own unique voice, using simple lines and shading to create a powerful emotional impact. It's a good reminder that art isn't just about what you see, but how it makes you feel.
