Giovanni Domenico Tiepolo created this watercolor, 'Frieze of Allegorical Figures', using paper, pen and ink, and wash, all fairly traditional drawing materials. Here, the relatively absorbent paper has allowed for a fluid application of ink and wash, creating a sense of atmospheric depth. The rapid, calligraphic pen lines give definition to the figures, whilst the graded washes model their forms. The washes are translucent, meaning that you can still see the paper beneath, creating a luminous effect, especially where the white paper is left unpainted. Tiepolo was a master of this technique, able to create dynamic compositions with minimal means. The efficiency of the drawing process allowed for quick production, meeting the demands of a busy workshop environment in 18th century Venice. It's important to note the connection between materials, making, and context in understanding the full meaning of this drawing, challenging the distinction between fine art and craft.
